Giving Back to Our Community

The New York Capital Chapter has been active in community service for many years. In addition to individual members volunteering their services for a variety of activities, the chapter continues to be dedicated to give back to the community in which the members live.

Last year, the Chapter participated in the various events to help raise funds for several organizations including the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York, Community Hospice, the American Cancer Society, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Albany Medical Center Children's hospital, and WMHT. In addition, we participated in the IRS's VITA Tax Preparers program and Habitat for Humanity.

Serving a Meal for the City Mission of Schenectady

Serving a Meal for the City Mission of Schenectady
When: Saturday, January 7, 2017 from 2 - 4 pm
Where: Wallace M. Campbell Dining Center, 512 Smith Street, Schenectady, NY 12305

The AGA New York Capital Chapter will assist the City Mission of Schenectady in preparing and serving a meal for Downtown Schenectady’s homeless. The City Mission provides three hot meals a day as well as shelter to homeless and needy families. The mission always needs volunteers to provide this valuable service to the Capital District. The mission provides the food, while we are there primarily to serve it.

Helping at Habitat for Humanity ReStore - Capital District

Where: 70 Fuller Road, Albany, NY 12205

The AGA New York Capital Chapter needs volunteers to help at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore – Capital District. The ReStore helps make home improvements more affordable while helping to make the dream of homeownership a reality for low-income, working-class families in the Capital District. The ReStore is open to the public and offers great deals on new and gently used building materials, appliances, furniture, tools and other home improvement products at a fraction of the retail price. The ReStore merchandise is donated by generous individuals, businesses and contractors who want to support the Habitat for Humanity Capital District’s mission. The funds raised by the ReStore are used to help build affordable homes in Albany, Southern Saratoga and Rensselaer County.

Helping at Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Capital Region

The AGA New York Capital Chapter needs volunteers to help clean, organize, etc. at the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Capital Region, Inc. The Ronald McDonald House promotes the health, development and well-being of children and their families. They accomplish this by providing a home away from home for families of seriously ill children, and by creating and supporting programs that directly improve the lives of children and their families.

By volunteering, you can help meet the needs of the families using the Ronald McDonald House and spend an evening cleaning up around the House that Love Built.

Bottle and Can Sorting at the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society
When: Saturday, April 29, 2017 from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm
Where: 3 Oakland Avenue, Menands, New York 12204 (right off exit 6 of Rt. 787)

The AGA New York Capital Chapter will assist the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society in sorting donated bottles and cans by brands to be turned in for their five cent deposit. The Humane Society has a dedicated area where bottle and can contributions are dropped off around the clock and the sorting is done. The sorting area is outside, so dress appropriately.

The Humane Society receives over 6,000 animals per year and receives no ongoing funding from government or other animal groups. In 2016, the Humane Society raised over $100,000 from their bottle and can donations to help support their programs. They rely on volunteers to make this bottle deposit money.

If you would like to bring your family - they have to be at least 14 years of age to participate.

The Rescue Mission is a 501(c)(3), privately funded, non-profit organization…it does not accept any city, state, or federal funds.

* Volunteer Appreciation Social Event – McGeary’s Irish Pub *

Immediately following the Capital City Rescue Mission Event, the AGA New York Capital Chapter will be hosting a Year-End Community Service Volunteer Appreciation Social Event at McGeary’s Irish Pub (located at 4 Clinton Square, Albany, NY 12207). A limited number of drinks and munchies will be provided by the AGA. We encourage attending AGA members to bring a non-AGA member to the social event. This event will be a nice way of saying Thank You to the Community Service Volunteers, an enjoyable introduction to the AGA for non-members, and a networking opportunity.

Annual Golf Tournament to Benefit the Albany Medical Center’s Children’s Hospital

The local chapters of the AGA, IIA, ACFE and ISACA are co-sponsoring a golf tournament to benefit the Albany Medical Center Children’s Hospital and you are invited to participate.

The day will include coffee, bagels and juice in the morning, 18 holes of golf (cart included) at the Van Patten Golf Club in Clifton Park, as well as an awards ceremony with lunch after golf. Lunch will include Barbequed Chicken, Sausage and Peppers, Ziti, Deli Platter, Cheeses, and Salads. The cost of this event is $100 per person with the proceeds to benefit the Albany Medical Center’s Children’s Hospital.

Please join us for a day of golf and to support the wonderful accomplishments of the Children's Hospital. Don’t have a full team? Not a problem! We will round out your team with other participants (we'll contact you about your team prior to the event)

Helping at Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York

The AGA New York Capital Chapter needs volunteers to help at the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York. The Regional Food Bank has been helping to feed the poor and hungry in our communities since 1982. It is the only organization of its kind in northeastern New York.

The Food Bank collects large donations of food from the food industry and distributes it to charitable agencies serving hungry and disadvantaged people in 23 counties. From Plattsburgh to Newburgh, in urban, rural, and suburban communities, the Food Bank provides over 30 million pounds of food a year to 1,000 agencies.

By volunteering, you can help alleviate hunger and prevent food waste. We ask that you bring a friend or family member to help sort the food and products that are distributed to the local pantries.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk – American Cancer Society

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is the largest network of breast cancer events in the nation, uniting nearly 300 communities to finish the fight. At this local Making Strides event, you will join breast cancer survivors, caregivers, and other people who have been touched by this devastating disease to express hope and the shared determination to make this breast cancer’s last century.

Please support the AGA New York Capital Chapter in collecting donations and join us in walking for the fight against breast cancer. Our team name is AGA NY Capital Chapter. If you would like to participate, you can go directly to the Making Strides website to make a donation, sign up to be a walker or both.
